1st Press Open Innovation Challenge
Do you have a startup or scaleup and can you offer solutions that transform the media industry?
We are looking for Artificial Intelligence projects to develop proofs of concept. We offer the 5 selected startups 8.000 euros to develop a PoC and the equivalent of 20.000 euros in actions similar to branded content.
Innsomnia Accelerator and the Clúster de Inteligencia Artificial de la Comunidad de Madrid develop the 1st Press Open Innovation Challenge

Innsomnia Business Accelerator
It is one of the main Spanish accelerators that solves the technological challenges of startups with corporates in different verticals: FinTech, Insurtech, eHealth, AgroTech, ArtTech … and who leads the open innovation programme in press for the AI Cluster.
Clúster Inteligencia Artificial
Association that collaborates with the Community of Madrid in promoting the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the public and private sector. The Cluster will finance the 5 startups selected for the Open Innovation Programme in Press with 8,000 euros each.
El Español
Communication group that will act as a SandBox for the development of the prototyping of the startups’ projects in a real environment with real data from the newspaper.
El Español will additionally contribute to the selected startups:
SandBox
The proofs of concept will be carried out in the real environment of your editorial office and different departments.
Endowment
Each selected startup will receive the equivalent of 20,000 euros in branded content to disseminate their projects.
Partners
El Español and Innsomnia will provide technology partners for cloud hosting and mentoring services.
Implementation
In 2025, El Español will be able to develop with the selected startups the implementation of their projects.

Who can apply and conditions
Startups and scaleups
Startups and scaleups that have already developed similar projects in the press or in other sectors and whose experiences can be transferred and applied to the journalism sector through co-creation with professionals are eligible.
Deadline and selection
The deadline for receipt of applications will be open from 7 to 28 October 2024. Five startups will be selected.
Proof of Concept
Each selected startup will receive €8,000 for the development of the Proof of Concept (PoC) of funds from the AI Cluster of the Community of Madrid.
Prototyping in SandBox
El Español will provide the equivalent of 20,000 euros in actions similar to branded content for each of the selected startups that develop a prototype for the newspaper with data from the medium that will be owned by El Español.
Process
Innsomnia will lead the scouting, the selection of startups and the co-creation process with the professionals of the sector.
Technology and development
Proof of Concepts (PoCs) can be developed until the end of March 2025.

Innsomnia will analyse the degree of adaptation of the start-ups and their continuity in the programme.
2025 FEB. – MARCH
Prototyping in SandBox
Adaptation of the proof of concept to the real environment of El Español’s SandBox for prototyping with its data. The ownership of the data and the prototype will be regulated by private agreement between the newspaper and the startups.
APRIL …
El Español will negotiate with each startup the implementation of solutions in the newsroom and other areas of the newspaper.
